The Evolution of Online Thrifting: The History of ShopGoodwill.com

At ShopGoodwill.com, we’re proud to be a go-to for sustainable online thrifting, helping give back to our communities every single day. As a pioneer in the online thrift store space (and the first online auction site created, owned, and operated by a non-profit), our platform bridged the gap between traditional brick-and-mortar thrift shopping and digital e-commerce, setting our story in motion over 25 years ago.

Whether you’re new to shopping with us or a years-long fan, we’d love to share a bit about our history with you. Read on to learn about the evolution of ShopGoodwill.com auctions and see how we continue to prioritize the same values we were founded on in everything we do.

The Origins of ShopGoodwill.com: From Local Storefronts to Online Auctions

ShopGoodwill.com was founded by Goodwill of Orange County and launched in 1999—the time of Beanie Babies, tech growth, and, of course, all things Y2K. This, along with some seriously hard work, created the perfect storm for success. But how did it all begin?

The 1999 Launch and Early Expansion

Former executive of Goodwill of Orange County, George Kessinger, was inspired by something seemingly insignificant that would turn out to be much more: a simple piece of plastic. Unable to sell it in-store (even in the as-is lot for $1!), George took a leap of faith, putting it on our online thrift store in the early days.

To George’s surprise and delight, it sold on ShopGoodwill.com for about $1,100. But what was this mystery item that launched over 25 years of online collectible success? That simple piece of plastic turned out to be a coveted Picasso etching, paving the way for us—and thousands of amazing items that would eventually find a home on our platform.

As a small non-profit, we quickly became trailblazers in the tech space. This sparked our passion for staying ahead of the curve, adopting technology early and continuing to innovate in order to spread access to rare, donated items. In this way, we are able to help sellers maximize the value of each piece, bringing additional revenue directly to their local communities, and supporting the mission-driven services we remain committed to.

Key Milestones and E-Commerce Upgrades

Over time, more and more regional Goodwill organizations joined our centralized online marketplace, reaching a nationwide audience of treasure hunters in the process. Today, more than 135 locations in North America list donated items from their local stores on ShopGoodwill.com, making us a go-to when it comes to vintage online shopping.

As a custom platform and unique online thrift store, we’ve continued to evolve, reacting to sellers’ needs and adding specialized features to our site. From introducing mobile site capabilities to integrating AI into the listing process, we’re able to make the online auction process seamless (and accessible) from start to finish.

While we strive to improve every single day, one thing remains constant: We always put the Goodwill mission first. We’re working for the people, helping fund an array of life-changing programs and services for individuals facing barriers, including:

  • Job Placement Programs: Assistance with job applications, resume building, interview prep, and more that helped over 142,000 people land employment last year alone.

  • Vocational Training: Hands-on training designed to help individuals gain skills for today’s most in-demand jobs, like IT support, project management, data analytics, and cybersecurity, assisting more than two million learners since 2017.

  • Educational Advancement: With more than 26,000 people just last year attaining degrees or credentials through Goodwill programs.

Plus, many Goodwills offer additional support when it comes to self-advocacy, financial literacy, and so much more! There are more than 150 individual Goodwill agencies, and each one partners with and provides a variety of powerful programs to make a difference in their local communities. To learn more about what’s offered near you, explore your local Goodwill’s site and mission services.

Putting items online immediately allows for a greater impact across services, and around 85 cents of every dollar earned on ShopGoodwill.com goes directly back to local Goodwill agencies and their communities—our true measure of success and motivator for everything we do.
